This award honors the project for the coverage of the Olympic Torch relay convoy ahead of the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. Initiated and led by France TV, this collaboration provided an innovative solution based on private 5G and cloud production.
At the onset of this project was the objective to broadcast live pictures of the torch relay on the France TV channel PARIS 2024. It meant that several video streams of the torch bearers had to be collected, backhauled simultaneously to studios in Paris, to be then broadcasted 10 hours every day on a live channel. The challenge was to do it during the 69 days of the convoy, and on its 1625 km long and sinuous course across French cities, towns and villages. This would have been extremely difficult to realize with classical HF retransmission technology like the one used for the Tour de France, where a helicopter or a plane constantly flies over the race.
In contrast, the compactness of the Obvios Dome private 5G solution enabled to pack a complete infrastructure inside a typical passenger car, equipped with both a 5G radio and a satellite dish on the roof. So, while ensuring good quality of service for the upstreaming of the videos, Obvios Dome together with a 100% cloud production, reduced CO2 emissions by over 600 tons and costs by 92%.
By delivering a proof of private 5G flexibility and reliability, it marks a technological milestone for broadcasting of live events.
